How does Ayurvedic massage work?

Ayurvedic massage, or “Abhyanga”, is a part of one of the ancient healing system in the world that has been practicing in India from thousands of years called "Ayurveda" in which the entire body is rhythmically massaged with herb infused oil to remove toxins and blocks from the system. The rhythmic and deeply relaxing movements of Ayurvedic massage on all over the body help remove negative energy and move the prana or life force, stimulating the body’s vital energy.

Massage is the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body using the hands. In Ayurvedic treatment, massage is done in a traditional manner typically with application of medicated herbal oils.  Specific herbs and spices are chosen for their therapeutic qualities in treating various health problems.

Ayurvedic Massage is a deeply relaxing and rejuvenating experience.   It protects from stress, anxiety, exhaustion, and vata disorders (vata is the air force which is primarily responsible for movements in the body, ie. circulation, elimination of toxins, breath, digestion etc.  When vata is out of balance, problems like arthritis, indigestion, constipation, headaches, pain, problems sleeping, bad circulation, heart and breathing issues appear). Abhyanga nourishes the body, extends the life span, provides good sleep, improves the skin texture, improves vision, and provides better physical stability.

It penetrates deep into the tissues to loosen toxins at the cellular level. It enhances immunity, increases circulation, elimination of toxins, and creates deep relaxation in the body and mind. A good Indian massage helps our bodies grow and renew. Ayurvedic massage provides deep relaxation. Physically, it helps all systems of the body. Mentally, it helps the mind to relax by removing energies that store past tensions and emotional problems in our body.

The herbed oil is important because it multiplies and carries the therapeutic benefits of the herbs beyond the skin and into the cells. It helps to sustain the flow of prana in the body long after the massage is complete, bringing a greater sense of overall harmony and balance to the recipient.

The oil we use for Ayurvedic massage is a special infusion that we make ourselves, based on the family recipe passed down from Nakul's grandmother in India.  Ingredients include nutmeg, ginger, and lemon leaves among other things and are chosen for their specific therapeutic qualities.   We create our massage oils by heating them with the selected ingredients over a period of time to release the medicinal qualities of each herb and spice into the oil.
